THEMATIC SCOPE

  • Soil remediation technologies
  • Waste management in extraction industry – legal, technical and economic aspects (reclamation of old post-industrial landfills)
  • Preventing ecosystems degradation – air and water protection in areas under mining industry impact
  • Revitalization of post-industrial areas in regional development strategies - legal and economic aspects

PARTICIPANTS:
The invitation is extended to all stakeholders involved in remediation and redevelopment processes of degraded areas, especially post-industrial sites. Representatives of the following sectors are welcome to take part in the conference: state administration, local governments, scientific and research centres, mining companies, site owners, contractors dealing with soil and groundwater remediation and land reclamation, construction companies, financial institutions, insurance companies.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Land surface is presently considered as a non-renewable resource and as such requires new legal, organisational and financial solutions to deal with. For many regions of Europe, particularly Central European industrialised cities, land degradation is an issue which affects their attractiveness and competitiveness. However, revitalization processes of degraded areas may become an opportunity for the local and regional communities allowing in particular to address the environmental and social problems in a systemic way.
The main objective of the Conference is to present the achievements and outputs of research projects as well as the existing practical, technical and organizational solutions supporting the development of areas degraded by extraction processes of coal and metal ores, abandoned steel mills and other facilities related to metallurgical industry, especially those located within urban agglomerations. The Conference will also address soil quality management from the European Thematic Soil Strategy perspective as well as in the context of legal, financial, technological, health and information issues. Examples of best practices of post-industrial areas management from Poland and other countries will be presented to demonstrate effective remediation options, organisational solutions, financial engineering and transformations of industrial facilities.
The intention of the Organisers is to initiate a discussion during the Conference that will focus on making a change in the up-to-date extraction practices which results from the planned amendments of the geological and mining law and the new extraction waste act. Facility which generates the waste will be responsible for the identification and application of such a technology of mineral extraction which prevents or minimizes the volume of spoils and their negative impact on the environment and human health.
The Conference will contribute to a multi-level integration of different stakeholders for which supporting sustainable development of post-industrial areas is a priority issue.
